I can only assign project members to an issue if they have already commented on it.

I would like to assign relevant project members directly, even if they have not commented yet.

Could you clarify what access or role project members need in order to be available as assignees on issues?

Hi @JakobNoerby — here are two ways to handle this.

Root cause: GitHub requires someone to either have Write+ access, be an org member, or have commented on the issue before you can assign them. This is to prevent spam.

Option 1 — How it works today (no changes needed)

  • A person must write a comment on the issue (e.g. "I'll take this")
  • After they've commented, you can assign them via the sidebar
  • If no one has commented, you'll need to reach out (e.g. email or chat) and ask them to comment on the issue so you can assign it
Pros Cons
Zero setup, zero maintenance You have to remind people to comment every time

Option 2 — Team membership (requires ongoing maintenance)

A team called ai-heatcontrol-maintainers already exists with the right permissions. Everyone in the team shows up in the assignee dropdown automatically — no comment needed.

Your ongoing tasks if you go this route:

  • Add a new person: Go to the team page → Add member → type username. ~30 seconds.
  • Remove someone who leaves: Same page → Remove member. ~10 seconds.
  • Someone can't be assigned: Check they're in the team; if not, add them. ~30 seconds.

Pros Cons
Assign anyone in 2 clicks, no commenting back-and-forth You have to maintain the member list over time

I want to go with option 2. I'll tried to follow the instructions but can't invite people to join the team since they're not member of the organisation?
